Nutanix Bootcamp – Move to Nutanix AOS or AHV

Oct 12, 2026

Most IT teams don’t wake up wanting to think about storage arrays, firmware versions, or what happens when a drive fails at 2 a.m. They want infrastructure that just keeps running, and stays out of the way of the people who depend on it. That’s the promise of the Nutanix Cloud Platform: compute, storage, and networking managed as one system, with upgrades and recovery handled for you instead of by you.

In this Nutanix Bootcamp session, XenTegra’s Philip Sellers is joined by Nutanix solutions engineers Youssef El-Shaer and Orniel Ventura for a hands-on walkthrough of the Nutanix Cloud Platform and Nutanix Unified Storage, complete with live demos of one-click upgrades, file and object storage setup, and Nutanix Data Lens.

The Problem with Infrastructure Built in Silos

Traditional data centers grew one box at a time: separate servers, separate storage arrays, separate networking, each with its own management tools, upgrade cycles, and support contracts. Over time, that adds up to:

  • Expensive SANs and NAS appliances that have to be sized, licensed, and refreshed on their own schedule
  • Upgrade weekends spent juggling firmware, hypervisor, and software compatibility by hand
  • Windows file servers that need patching just to keep sharing files
  • Limited visibility into who’s accessing data, and whether something unusual is happening
  • Scaling decisions that force you to buy compute when you only needed storage, or the other way around

Nutanix was built to collapse those silos into a single platform that’s simpler to run and easier to grow.

One Platform, Managed as One System

Youssef opens the session by tracing Nutanix’s evolution from hyperconverged pioneer to a full hybrid cloud platform. Instead of managing compute, storage, and networking separately, the Nutanix Cloud Platform runs them together across a cluster of nodes, managed centrally from Prism Central.

That approach shows up in a few practical ways:

  • Scale what you need. Add storage capacity without adding compute (or vice versa) as your workloads change.
  • Data locality. Nutanix keeps a VM’s data close to the node it runs on, which reduces latency and improves performance.
  • Built-in networking and security, including encryption at rest and support for self-encrypting drives.
  • Hybrid flexibility. Support for external storage helps organizations modernize at their own pace instead of all at once.

Resilience That Doesn’t Wait for a Ticket

Hardware fails. What matters is what happens next. Nutanix’s self-healing architecture starts rebuilding data immediately when a drive or node goes down, and because every node and disk in the cluster participates in the rebuild, recovery is faster than traditional RAID and avoids hotspots.

The team also walks through Nutanix’s resiliency options:

  • RF2 keeps two copies of your data across the cluster.
  • RF3 keeps three copies, for environments that need to tolerate more simultaneous failures.
  • Snapshots, replication, and disaster recovery protect data beyond a single cluster, including one-click failover and DR testing.

Upgrades in One Click

One of the most practical parts of the session is Youssef’s live demo of Nutanix Lifecycle Manager (LCM). Instead of tracking compatibility across firmware, hypervisor, and software versions by hand, LCM scans the cluster, builds an upgrade plan, and rolls it out one node at a time. Each node is placed in maintenance mode, upgraded, and brought back online while workloads keep running.

Teams also keep control over timing. If you’d rather not be on the bleeding edge, you can choose a more stable version instead of the newest release.

Unified Storage: Files, Objects, and Volumes Without the Extra Hardware

Orniel takes over to walk through Nutanix Unified Storage, which brings file, object, and block storage onto the same platform your workloads already run on. His live demo shows how quickly you can stand up:

  • Nutanix Files, for file shares without a separate Windows file server, NAS appliance, or the licensing and patching that come with them
  • Nutanix Objects, for object storage organized into buckets, with performance metrics built in

Data Lens: Knowing What’s Happening to Your Data

Storage isn’t just about capacity anymore; it’s about visibility. Nutanix Data Lens gives teams granular insight into how data is being accessed and used, which helps with:

  • Spotting unusual activity, such as ransomware-style behavior, before it spreads
  • Auditing who accessed what, and when
  • Supporting compliance requirements in regulated industries like healthcare

Orniel’s demo shows how Data Lens surfaces those insights without a separate monitoring stack.
