In this episode of The Citrix Session, XenTegra&#8217;s Andy Whiteside is joined by Citrix&#8217;s Philipp Benkler and Somesh Naidu, along with XenTegra Solutions Architects Randy Price and Charles Anderson, to walk through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citrix.com\/blogs\/2026-09\/why-healthcare-recovery-should-be-a-reboot-not-a-rebuild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Why Healthcare Recovery Should Be a Reboot, Not a Rebuild,&#8221;<\/a> a recent Citrix blog by Cletis Earle, Citrix&#8217;s Field CTO for Healthcare. They cover Citrix&#8217;s new UniconOS dual boot capability, which puts a second, secure operating system on existing Windows PCs so users can reboot and keep working when Windows fails, whether from a bad update, a CrowdStrike-style incident, or a cyberattack. The conversation covers why recovery has to happen at the endpoint, how dual boot works, what it takes to deploy, and why it applies well beyond healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Healthcare Recovery Should Be a Reboot, Not a Rebuild: UniconOS Dual Boot\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4416PX_NvNY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recovery Happens at the Endpoint<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations spend a lot of time planning how to bring the data center back after an outage. Far fewer have a real plan for the endpoint, and that&#8217;s where recovery actually succeeds or fails. As Philipp puts it, it doesn&#8217;t matter how good your data center is if your people can&#8217;t get to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The XenTegra team has seen the gap firsthand. Randy notes that very few clients include endpoints in their business continuity and disaster recovery (BC\/DR) planning. Andy shared two real examples from past employers: one plan was simply &#8220;give everyone a laptop and tell them to take it home&#8221; (the CIO hadn&#8217;t taken his home in over a year), and the other was &#8220;go buy a PC at your local store.&#8221; Philipp added a third: a company that keeps nearly double its laptop inventory in a warehouse, which is expensive to maintain and useless if a snowstorm keeps people from getting there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Healthcare, and Why Everyone Else Too<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthcare makes the stakes obvious. When an emergency room loses access to its systems, the impact is measured in patient care, not just lost productivity. But as Philipp points out, financial services, manufacturing, pharma, and nearly every other industry face the same problem. Andy goes further: there&#8217;s no industry where this doesn&#8217;t apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The CrowdStrike Moment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philipp calls the CrowdStrike incident the turning point. The technology to do this existed years ago, but the event made it clear to everyone that a single bad update can take down thousands of endpoints at once. It didn&#8217;t change Citrix&#8217;s direction for Unicon; it changed the speed. Charles adds that this isn&#8217;t hypothetical: Windows updates that leave systems unusable have been a real-world issue in recent months. And with growing security concerns around agentic AI, the team agrees the question is no longer whether something will break at the OS level, but when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Single Way to Deliver Apps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most organizations run a mix: thin clients, Windows PCs, virtual desktops, published apps, and SaaS apps in the browser. Philipp argues the answer isn&#8217;t one delivery method but the right mix at the right pace, since most classic apps will move to the web, but not all of them. That mix is exactly why endpoint recovery matters: dual boot gives Windows PC users a secure fallback that can still reach the browser, email, critical systems like an EHR, and Citrix-delivered apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Unicon Dual Boot Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a high level, dual boot puts a second operating system on the same device:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An installer runs on a working Windows machine, checks available disk space, carves out a partition, and installs UniconOS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The device reboots once to register with Unicon management, then returns to Windows. The process can run silently with no user involvement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Admins deploy the installer with existing tools like SCCM or Microsoft Intune. Once onboarded, devices are managed through Unicon&#8217;s management console, on-premises or in Citrix Cloud.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At boot, admins choose how users get to UniconOS: a visible boot menu, a countdown, a function key, or a hidden option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Unicon partition is small, just a few gigabytes, so it fits on nearly any Windows PC. Dual boot moved from tech preview to general availability in the past few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Licensing and Hardware<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Entitlements:<\/strong> dual boot is included in existing Citrix entitlements that cover UniconOS. There is no separate dual boot SKU. Under Citrix Flex licensing, customers can also license just the pieces they need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hardware:<\/strong> UniconOS runs on x86 devices. Citrix&#8217;s hardware compatibility list (HCL) already includes more than 100 devices and is growing quickly now that dual boot opens Unicon to the broader PC market. Andy&#8217;s take: every client running Windows on the endpoint should know this option exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Insurance Policy That Might Change How You Work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, Philipp describes dual boot as an insurance policy: something you hope never to use but are glad to have on a bad day. It can also be a low-risk way to test what&#8217;s possible, such as moving 10% of staff onto the Unicon side and seeing how they do. Andy shared his own experience: he runs Linux daily on a dual boot machine and realized during the conversation that he hadn&#8217;t booted into Windows in more than two months. As more apps move to SaaS and the browser, some users may find they never need to switch back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Should You Do Next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Try it.<\/strong> Dual boot is available on the Citrix download page with documentation for testing. Start with a proper pilot before deploying at scale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Study your apps.<\/strong> Find out how many of your apps don&#8217;t actually need Windows on the endpoint.
